In past history there were very strict rules for courtship and proposals. Women were never allowed to ask a man to marry them unless it was on February 29.
The name "Sadie Hawkins" came from the cartoon strip "Li' Abner." A character by the sname of Sadie Hawkins lived in Dogpatch and could not get a man to propose to her. Her father, being the mayor, declared February 29 as "Sadie Hawkin's Day" and she chased after every unmarried man in town!!
*** I only know one person who was born on February 29. Happy Birthday, Shelby!!
