Wisdom of Solomon . . .
There has been a circus playing this week in Florida. For what should have been a very serious procedure became a comical display of theatrics by the “judge”. The focus of the court procedure was to decide where the corpse of the late “show” girl, Anna Nicole Smith, would be buried. In addition to the Judge, there were three major actors in this drama: the estranged mother, the ex-boyfriend, and the current lawyer and live-in boyfriend. Accompanying each of them was a barrage of lawyers and givers of wisdom.
They had all come before a judge who was to render a decision after having heard the “facts” from all sides. The parade of facts by each contender consisted of making themselves look good and trying their best to make each other look bad. The judge also used the court time, with television cameras rolling, to polish his joke telling skills. He also worked hard at being a philosopher which just didn’t blend well with his New York accent.
Thursday, the judge decided that a decision would be made. The big surprise was – He didn’t make it! The decision was placed on the shoulders of a court appointed guardian of the 5-month old child that Ms. Smith left behind. His instructions were to get together with the three contenders and come to a decision on where the body should be buried.
My first thought was, “Why didn’t you save the time and money of a week-long trial and make that choice in the first place?”
We were discussing the whole fiasco last night as a family, having a good time laughing at the antics of the judge and behavior of the contenders when Anna came up with the perfect solution.
Anna’s solution reminded me of a decision made by the wisest man of all time: Solomon. Do you remember the story in the Old Testament where two women bring a baby to Solomon, both claiming ownership of the said infant? Solomon, in all his wisdom, asked that a sword be brought and that the baby be cut in half. Each woman would receive half of the baby and the dilemma solved. Well, Solomon knew how the REAL mother would react. She would be willing to give up her baby in order to keep it safe and that’s what happened. When Solomon saw this display of love, he knew who the REAL mother was and awarded her the baby.
Anna’s solution to the fight over the body of Anna Nicole Smith is to cremate the corpse and place the remains in three urns. Each contender would have a piece of her to bury and all would be happy! I wonder if we would see who really loved her if the judge had called for that action to take place.
